6v) For the first time ever, I went to an event on campus. On September 30th, I attended Hickerson’s event of Guy and Girl Code. These are both TV shows on MTV and are shows that I like. They offer insight on the opposite sex and how they think about certain situations. Also, it is interesting to hear others girl opinion about common topics that we can all relate too. I went with my friend Tatiana, and when we first got there, there wasn’t that many people there.
There was definitely a 3 to 1 ratio of women to guys. Fortunately, as the night went on more guys came and they were all ready to add their input on every topic. Some things we talked about were relationships, dorming and roommates, partying, and bathroom etiquette. Some things I found surprising were some of the male’s responses to certain questions. One thing that came up was how it was ok for guys to hook up with multiple girls and that gets him more approval from their friends, and if a girl were to hook up with multiple guys she would be labeled as “hoe”. I knew all the men were going to agree to this, but what I was not expecting was the reason to why they believe it is like that. One brave guy announced that he believes that true because he claims that men expect more from women and hold them to a higher pedestal. I found this to be shocking and was expecting a completely different answer. One thing I liked about this event was that everyone was very active in each discussions and a lot of people inputted their opinions on all the topics being discussed.

"Fight or Flight'
6v) The word failure is not a simple word to define for it has such a different meaning to many people. For some people to fail is to get a bad grade on a test but is something that can be improved, and to others it’s a way of showing their not as good enough compared to other people and they let their failures define their character. The dictionary describes failure as a state or condition of not meeting a desired objective and is viewed as the opposite of success. In my own words, failure means not being able to reach a desired goal.
A new word that I discovered this week was in my psychology class. We talked about sympathetic, or the “fight or flight response”. It is one of the three major parts of the autonomic nervous system and its general action is to mobilize the system’s response stated above. It is a psychological reaction that occurs when something is either terrifying, mentally or physically. It what makes us either stay and “fight” for something, or to walk away, to “flight”, from it.
Also, a new word I discovered is parasympathetic. It is also one of the three major parts of the autonomic nervous system. It is responsible for the regulation of internal organs and glands that occur unconsciously. It’s different from the sympathetic because it slows downs the functions, instead of speeding it up. It’s a process that slows your heart rate and lets the body return to its normal state. It calms, rest, and digests the body.
Learn From Your MIstakes
6b) I hate to fail at something. I do learn from my mistakes, but I do tend to have a fixed mindset when I fist realize I failed at something. For me, it makes me feel less intelligent and I start to compare myself to other people. I don’t like to make mistakes, and I tend to be hard on myself when I do because I expect more from myself.
One thing I feel like I’ve been failing at in college is doing my homework when I know the teacher is not going to check it. I feel like there is no point to do it since it will go unnoticed but of course I was wrong. In my statistic class, we have multiple homework quizzes every week. Also, my professor is nice enough to let us even use our homework notebooks that have some of the answers in it. He takes three questions from our homework and then incorporates one we haven’t done yet. Since I never do my homework for that class, I have to see all those problems for the first time when I’m taking it. My professor is also nice enough to post the answers and the solutions to the homework problems online, but I still choose not too because I won’t get a grade for it. I personally believe if I’m not going to receive a letter grade for it, then it’s pointless. Since I don’t have the answers and unfamiliar with the problems, my grades for my quizzes have been on a decline.
This is something I’m currently working on. For the past week, I’ve completed all the homework assignments and checked to make sure I had all the right answers. For the ones I didn’t know, I wrote down the correct answer then later presented my professor with my question on it. I found that this really helped me and my quiz grades started to go back up. I learned from failing multiple quizzes that just because an assignment can go unnoticed, it doesn’t mean that isn’t beneficial to you in some shape or form.

Everyone Fails At Something
6a) Failure. Its only one simple word, but it has the power to make people hesitant to pursue their dreams. The thought of failing at something leads people to not even try something new. They are scared, scared to be wrong at something. This is also a trait of the fixed mindset. They look at failing as a weakness, instead of a learning experience. I do believe there is a balance of kids being allowed to fail and also being encouraged not to fail.
An example of this is portrayed in school. Teachers will encourage students to do their best, but when they color outside the lines of a picture, they get points taken off. Teachers are constantly trying to get their students to receive A’s on their paper and make it seem if you get anything else, you’re labeled as not being smart.
I think people need to have more of the growth mindset when it comes to failure. We tend to look at failure being a set back or a way of proving we aren’t good at something, instead of learning from them. Everything we go through is either a blessing or a lesson, but it’s up to us to take that from every experience. Learning from a failure will prevent us from doing the same thing later again and teaches us something we didn’t know. You can’t let failing at something define who you are. We all make mistakes and fail at something, and that’s just life.
